The state of Chhattisgarh has a robust culture of sports. The sports of Chhattisgrh comprise of football, hockey, cricket, basketball, kabbadi, volleyball, badminton and almost all other sports activities practiced all over India. Traditional sports activities too are practiced all over Chhattisgarh.
Sports stadiums form an important constituent of the sports of Chhattisgarh. The Ravishankar Shukla Stadium in Durg is among the most important sports stadiums in India. Raipur has many sports clubs and newly constructed international cricket stadium. Moreover, a futuristic sports compex is under construction in the city of Raipur.
The district of Rajnandgaon has a prosperous culture of sports activities. The place has produced many national and international sports personalities. The city has one of the biggest stadium of Chhattisgarh: the digvijaya Stadium. The city is famous for the sport of hockey. In fact, it is known as the 'Nursery of Hockey'. The city boasts of the Mahant Sarveshwar Das Memorial all India hockey tournament, which was inaugurated in 1941. Both cricket and hockey matches are held here. The Ranji Trophy tournaments too are held here.
Bhilai is another city which makes a rich contribution to the sports of Chhattisgarh. The SAIL Athletics Academy facilitates in moulding and honing champions of tomorrow. About 75 sports tournaments have been organized in this city since the formation of Chhattisgarh.
Chhattisgarh has very active sports associations working in the state. The Olympic Association of Chhattisgarh has been very active in spreading sports culture in the state. The government of Chhattisgarh in collaboration with Chhattisgarh Olympic Association has very rightly envisioned the hosting of National Games- 2013 in the State.
